ABSTRACT
Odors are a mixture of volatile chemicals (organic and inorganic compounds), known as unpleasant gases which are perceptible even at low concentrations (low odor threshold). Chemicals which cause irritation of the mucous membranes of nose, throat and eyes through stimulation of the trigeminal nerve are among them. In some people psychosomatic symptoms occur as a result of exposure to odor. The sources of odors may be processes naturally occurring in nature (e.g. distribution of organic matter) and effects of human activities (sewage treatment plants, landfills, farms pigs). Emission of odors often goes beyond odor generating plants exposing the local population to their impact. Complaints of people motivate to create uniform criteria of smell and to study impact of odors on human health.
