ABSTRACT
Introduction:
The aim of this study was to evaluate whether in our country there are circumstances favourable to the promotion of the so-called “system of a rapid transition to the second child” At the outset, we present the demographic situation and the methods used to counteract the decline in births. The system of a rapid transition to the second child is recently implemented in some European countries as an action that is able to increase the fertility of women.

Material and Methods:
The assessment was based on the analysis of data obtained by two anonymous questionnaires, which was distributed among 138 students of the supplementary studies for nurses pursuing at Higher School of Applied Sciences in Nysa during the academic year 2012/2013. Data obtained through this survey allowed the calculation for this group of women: fertility rate, total fertility rate and the average age of the birth of the first, second, and alternatively a subsequent child. The answers for the questions in our questionnaires have enabled the analysis of the attitudes and beliefs of women from the age <28.55> group. The second questionnaire contained questions closely related to the decision of having a second child quickly.

Results:
Fertility rate for the mentioned group of women is 1.72. When considering only women over the age of 40 years – in the subgroup of 86 women it is 1.95. The average age of women giving birth to their first child is 24.43 years, to the second child is 28.43 years, to the third child is 31.7 years.

Conclusions:
The average spread between the average age at birth of the first and second child (about 4 years) and assessed attitudes and beliefs of the women show the favourable circumstances to the promotion of the proposed system in our country. It seems that if one takes into account conditions reported by our respondents necessary for decision of rapid possession of the second child – the promotion of the considered system probably could influence the number of births.
