ABSTRACT
Aim of the study:
The aim of study was to estimate the total fertility rate in the group of women, the participants of so called supplementary study of nursing. We aimed to acquire and analyze the attitudes, beliefs and attitudes of women to motherhood and the desire to have children. These data enable to verify the interdisciplinary hypothesis justifying the decline of birth rate and low fertility.

Material and Methods:
The authors performed the survey by means of a questionnaire formulated after a comprehensive discussion of possible reasons of birth rate decline. Through the questions of the survey we tried to verify the hypothesis that the decline is the result of the cumulative mental changes occurring in contemporary societies. The questionnaire was completed by 62 women studying nursing at the State Higher Vocational School in Nysa, during the academic year 2011/2012.

Results:
The age of the students under study ranged <32, 55> years, and mean age was 44.5 years, 62 surveyed women gave birth to 113 children, so fertility rates calculated for this group is 1.82.

Discussion:
Attitude and views of nurses, assessed by the degree of compliance with the pattern of beliefs not conducive to have children seems to justify why the fertility rate in the group of women is quite high.

Conclusions:
The multifaceted and interdisciplinary hypothesis (theoretical model) formulated at the outset of our work, describing the decline in birth rates, as it seems, may be useful for attempts to estimate the pro-family attitudes in different populations of women. The results, in the light of compliance with the proposed theoretical model, allow for the formulation of proposals for action, which would counteract the decline in birth rates.
