ABSTRACT
Introduction and objective:
Psychosomatic complaints in children and adolescents constitute an important health and environmental issue. Symptoms such as abdominal pain, headaches, fatigue, tension, and dizziness often co-occur with school stress, family difficulties, sleep disturbances, and impaired functioning. From an environmental health perspective, they should be considered in the context of living conditions, relationships, lifestyle, and school-related burdens. The aim of this study is to present these complaints as an environmental health problem and to discuss functional assessment and routine monitoring of change.

Brief description of the state of knowledge:
This study is a narrative review of the literature. The analysis included 30 publications purposefully selected for their relevance to psychosomatic complaints in children and adolescents, environmental factors, functional assessment, and routine monitoring. The literature indicates that such complaints are associated with family and school-related factors, lifestyle, school absenteeism, reduced activity, poorer quality of life, relational difficulties, and more frequent use of healthcare services. Functional assessment should include not only the everity of symptoms, but also the impact of these symptoms on sleep, physical activity, as well as school, family, and social functioning.

Summary:
The assessment of psychosomatic complaints in children and adolescents should go beyond a one-time description of symptoms. It is necessary to consider the child’s living environment and observe changes over time. Routine monitoring may support a more accurate assessment of the course of the problem, recognition of functional consequences, and planning of supportive interventions involving the family, school, and lifestyle.
