ABSTRACT
Epidemiology of childhood asthma determines its priority in public health programmes. It is estimated that up to 25% of children population could be affected worldwide. While recently, in some countries a plateau in incidencem of asthma is observed, in many regions of the world the prevalence rates of this disease are rising steadily. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct suitable prevention programmes. Chances for success of the first stage prophylaxis seem to be limited due to complex etiology and its chronic nature. Therefore, much more is expected from the second stage prophylaxis – screening in particular. One of the determinants of screening effectiveness is a reliable screening test. In case of asthma such a simple tool may be a short questionnaire comprising of questions on symptoms of respiratory system. The paper presents examples of short questionnaires, which are used to identify asthma, both worldwide and in Poland.
